Brand Activation Ideas: 12 Live Formats That Work

A brand activation is a live experience that gets people to do something with your brand, rather than just see it. The ones that work are simple to join, quick to learn and give people a reason to stay, play and share. If you’ve been asked for brand activation ideas for a launch, festival, roadshow or client event, start here, or see our brand activations service. Below is a menu of formats we run, grouped by what you want them to achieve. For the stand-and-booth version of the brief, see our trade shows service.

The 12 formats below are branded driving simulators, VR flight, AI Robot Wars, branded reaction wall, axe throwing, AR spaces, arcade games with a leaderboard, a tablet treasure hunt, a game show or quiz, a post-conference social, Taskmaster-style challenges and company-themed kit.

What makes a good brand activation

A good activation has a clear goal, a reason to stop, a mechanic people understand in seconds and something to take away or share. If one of those is missing, you get footfall without impact.

  • A clear goal. Crowd, leads, product demo, thank-you to customers, or social content. Choose one lead goal; the format follows from it.
  • A reason to stop. Something moving, lit up or competitive that people can see from across the room.
  • A quick-to-learn mechanic. If it needs a briefing, the queue will melt away. Pick something a stranger can play after watching one person.
  • A take-away or share moment. A score, a winner’s moment, a photo or a prize. This is what travels beyond the day.

Brand activation ideas to draw a crowd

The best crowd-pullers are visible, competitive and a bit spectacular. People watch someone else play, then want a go.

1. Branded driving simulators

Driving simulators are a good way to turn passers-by into a queue. We run 1-16 simulators with 55-inch screens and force-feedback wheels, with optional VR headsets and custom branding available.

We’ve run driving simulators with Optimum Nutrition, and Diane Collins, Business Developer at Howdens, told us: “The driving simulator was amazing and enjoyed by all our customers and staff.”

Add a lap-time leaderboard and a prize for the fastest, and people return to beat their score. When not to bother: if your audience has no connection to speed or competition, a simulator can feel like a fairground ride with a logo on it.

2. VR flight and VR experiences

Our VR flight simulator runs 1-30 headsets on roughly a 1x1 m footprint each, using real 360° fighter-jet footage and fully staffed by us. That small footprint per person makes it practical when floor space is tight.

VR can work at scale: a large room can take part at once, which suits a launch or a conference where you want everyone doing the same thing.

Our AI and Metaverse arcade is the broader option, with 1-50 VR headsets for groups of 10-1,000 and activities including Robot Wars, Metaverse Sports and Reaction Machines. It is beginner friendly. When not to bother: VR needs some set-up and supervision, so it is a poor fit for a space where people only have 30 seconds to spare.

3. AI Robot Wars-style challenge

In AI Robot Wars, teams of 6-12 steer robots in an arena tailored to your space, from a giant race track to a small arena, for up to 500 participants. No AI, robotics, coding or VR experience is needed.

The arena and screen give onlookers something to watch, and the set-up can be tailored to the space you have.

It works best for a brand with a tech, innovation or engineering story, where the format supports the message. When not to bother: it is a team format, so it suits a scheduled slot better than a drop-in stand.

Ideas that keep people on your stand and capture leads

For lead capture you want people to stay for a few minutes and hand over something, typically a name and email, in return for a go.

4. Branded reaction wall

A light-up reaction wall is quick, easy to watch and easy to understand. Alyssia, Events Lead at DPA Microphones, told us: “We hired branded Reaction Wall and Axe Throwing activities from Gold Tier Events for an annual corporate party and they went down a treat – super reliable, easy to use and fun for all.”

Two players side by side makes it competitive, and the branding sits right in the eyeline of everyone watching.

5. Axe throwing

Axe throwing was the other half of that DPA Microphones booking and is a draw in its own right. Because it needs supervision, it suits a fixed zone at an outdoor or larger indoor event, not a crowded exhibition aisle. Check venue permissions before you plan it.

6. Augmented reality spaces and games

We build custom, branded AR spaces and AR games for activations, conferences and trade shows. AR is the idea to reach for when you want the experience to be about your product or message, rather than a generic game with your logo applied.

7. Arcade games with a leaderboard and prize

Our arcade range includes retro games such as Street Fighter, Pong and Pac-Man, plus air hockey, table football, darts, shuffleboard and beer pong, in a free-flow, drop-in format. Retro arcade is familiar, so there’s no learning curve. Add a leaderboard and a prize for the high score, and people have a reason to come back and a reason to tell their colleagues.

Ideas for shows, festivals and shared spaces

When you share a space with other brands, you need something that draws people to you specifically and works in short bursts.

8. Tablet treasure hunt

Our tablet treasure hunt is an outdoor, geotagged challenge played on tablets, with prizes for the winning team. It uses the outdoor site itself as the activation, so it suits a brand that wants to move people around rather than hold them in one spot.

9. Game show or quiz format

Game shows and quizzes can be themed around your company, with set-up included. We run Taskmaster-style challenges, Cube challenges, quizzes and bingo. This fits when you have a stage or seating area and want to hold an audience, with a host to keep it moving.

We’ve also delivered an activation at the Barcode Festival, and corporate activations for DHL, General Electric and Nando’s.

Ideas for existing customers and clients

Activations aren’t only for strangers. If the goal is to thank people you already work with, a social after a conference or customer day is a strong format.

10. Post-conference social

We ran post-conference entertainment for 300 guests at Laravel Live, a conference we supported. Jonathan Behr, CTO / VP of Engineering there, said: “We used Gold Tier Events for an after-conference social with 250+ guests, and I cannot say enough good things about Reece and his crew.” Open arcade, game shows and simulators all work here because guests are already in one place and relaxed.

Creative and unique twists

If you want something that doesn’t look like everyone else’s stand, change the theme, not the mechanic.

11. Company-themed game shows and Taskmaster-style challenges

Take a format people already know and build the challenges around your product, your history or your industry. Questions about your sector, tasks that use your product, a host in your colours. It’s the same game show, but nobody else has it.

12. Custom-branded kit

Custom branding is available on our driving simulators, and custom branding and theming come with our corporate events. We have also supplied branded reaction walls. The simplest creative twist is often putting your brand on the thing people physically touch.

How to measure it

Decide what you’ll count before the day, not after. The simple measures are footfall, leads captured, dwell time and social shares.

  • Footfall and participation: how many people played, against how many walked past.
  • Leads captured: names and email addresses collected in exchange for a go.
  • Dwell time: how long people stayed at the activation.
  • Social shares: posts, tags and photos from the day.

Set the target against your goal. A crowd-pulling activation and a lead-capture activation shouldn’t be judged on the same number.

Planning basics

Start with your venue and your power: ask early about permissions, power supply, floor space and AV, because they decide what you can run. Public-space activations may need permits or licences, so check the rules for the specific location with the venue or local authority. For corporate events our team handles set-up, breakdown and all equipment, so your list is mostly access times and contact names. Tell us the date, space and goal and we’ll suggest what fits.

FAQs

What are some engaging activation ideas for my trade show booth?

Pick something people can play in under a minute and want to beat: a branded driving simulator, a reaction wall, or an arcade game with a leaderboard and prize. Games give visitors a reason to stop and a reason to come back. For stand-specific help, see our trade shows service.

What is a brand awareness campaign?

A brand awareness campaign aims to make more people recognise and remember your brand, usually through advertising, content or sponsorship. An activation is one live, in-person part of that: people physically take part in something branded. Awareness is the goal; the activation is one way to get there.

What are some creative ideas for branding?

Put your brand inside the experience rather than beside it. Think a game show themed around your company, a Taskmaster-style challenge built on your product, or branded kit such as a simulator wheel or reaction wall carrying your logo. People remember what they did, not a banner they walked past.

What are some of the best brand activation campaigns?

The best ones are simple, physical and easy to share. We would rather point to work we have delivered than cite campaigns we cannot verify: driving simulators with Optimum Nutrition, activations for DHL, General Electric and Nando’s, and an activation at the Barcode Festival.
