Conference Evening Entertainment Ideas: 12 Formats That Work
The last session ends and delegates start drifting off to their rooms or the bar. The best conference evening entertainment ideas give them a reason to stay and something to talk about. Pick a format by crowd size and energy, keep it drop-in where you can, and make sure it works for people who don’t drink.
This guide covers 12 formats that suit conference socials, grouped by how they feel in the room. There is a chooser table first, then the detail, then a short checklist.
How to choose conference evening entertainment ideas
Choose by three things: how many people will turn up, how much floor space you have, and whether you want people competing, chatting or both. Everything else, including theme and budget, follows from those.
Not every delegate will stay after a full day, so plan for the people who will and pick something that flexes. Drop-in formats flex well. Seated, hosted formats are best when you know most of the room will stay put, for example after a dinner.
| Format | Typical group size | Space | Energy | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Game shows and quizzes | Whole room | Stage or open area, tables | High, competitive | Seated crowds after dinner |
| The Betrayers (Traitors-style) | Boardroom to conference hall | Round tables and a presenter | Medium, social | Mixed groups who like to talk |
| CSI-style investigation | Teams at dinner tables | Round tables, screens | Medium, collaborative | Dinners and awards evenings |
| Arcade games | Drop-in | A corner or side room | Low to medium | Free-flow networking |
| Driving simulators | 1-16 simulators | Open floor space | High, competitive | Sponsors and brand tie-ins |
| VR flight simulator | 1-30 headsets | About 1 x 1 m per headset | Medium | Large rooms, wow factor |
| AI Robot Wars | Teams of 6-12, up to 500 | Arena sized to the room | High | Larger teams |
| AI & Metaverse arcade | 10-1,000 people | Open floor space | Medium to high | Tech and product events |
| Augmented reality | Drop-in | Branded space | Low to medium | Sponsors and launches |

Group sizes and space needs for the formats we run come from our own experience pages. Always confirm the final numbers with your supplier and your venue.
Hosted and competitive formats
If your crowd is seated and you want everyone involved at once, a hosted format is the safest choice. A presenter keeps the energy up, so the evening doesn’t depend on guests starting things themselves.
1. Game shows and quizzes
Game shows and quizzes are the most reliable option for a seated conference crowd. We run Taskmaster-style challenges, Cube-style challenges, quizzes and bingo, all customisable with company themes, and the setup is included. They suit post-conference and end-of-day socials because teams can form around tables and play from their seats.
A game show also gives your delegates a shared story for the next morning’s sessions, which a background DJ rarely does.
2. The Betrayers (Traitors-style game)
The Betrayers is our game inspired by the TV show The Traitors. It is adapted to the space and group size, from a boardroom to a conference hall, and a professional presenter and all the AV are included. It suits the delegate who will happily chat but won’t want to run around: the action is conversation, suspicion and voting.
It works best when guests are already seated in small groups, so it pairs well with a dinner or a relaxed table setup.
3. CSI-style investigation
Our CSI Investigation is part of our indoor team-building line-up, which runs from 10 to 100+ people. It can be set up with teams at round dinner tables, with the title on big screens and crime-scene tape and evidence markers on the tables. Teams work through clues together, so it suits dinners and awards evenings where delegates are already seated. See our indoor team building options for the full set of formats, or our wider team building events.
Drop-in and free-flow formats
Drop-in formats let people join for ten minutes, leave, and come back. They are the best answer to the worry that the room will go flat, because there is no start time to miss and no pressure to commit.
4. Arcade games
Our arcade games run as a free-flow, drop-in format. The line-up includes retro arcade favourites such as Street Fighter, Pong and Pac-Man, plus air hockey, table football, darts, shuffleboard and beer pong. Games last a few minutes, which gives people an easy reason to start a conversation and an easy exit.
Beer pong is optional of course. The same space works just as well with a line-up of non-alcoholic games.
5. Driving simulators
Driving simulators give you a queue of friendly rivals. We bring 1 to 16 simulators with 55-inch screens and force-feedback wheels, with optional VR headsets, and custom branding is available. That makes them a natural fit if a sponsor wants a presence at the evening.
Howdens used a driving simulator at an event. Diane Collins, Business Developer, said: “Gold Tier arrived at the exact time they said they would, they set everything up ready for the start of our event. The driving simulator was amazing and enjoyed by all our customers and staff.”
6. VR flight simulator
The VR flight simulator offers 1 to 30 headsets, each needing about a 1 x 1 m footprint, with real 360 degree fighter-jet footage and a fully staffed zone. The small footprint matters at a conference, where the evening space is often a hotel function room rather than a warehouse.
Tech and brand-led formats
Tech-led formats give people something they haven’t tried before, which is a better conversation starter than another drink. They are also where a sponsor’s brand fits most naturally.
7. AI Robot Wars
AI Robot Wars is for teams of 6 to 12, up to 500 participants, and it is tailored to the space, from a giant race track to a small arena. No AI, robotics, coding or VR experience is needed. It is the high-energy option for a larger crowd who already know each other.
8. AI & Metaverse arcade
The AI & Metaverse Experience Arcade offers 1 to 50 VR headsets for groups of 10 to 1,000, and it is beginner friendly. Activities include Robot Wars, Metaverse Sports and Reaction Machines. With several activities on offer, delegates can try a few rather than commit to a single game.
9. Augmented reality
We build custom, branded AR spaces and AR games for activations, conferences and trade shows. If your evening doubles as a sponsor opportunity, AR is a way to put a brand in front of delegates without a hard sell. It is covered on our augmented reality page.
Classic crowd-pleasers
These are the table-stakes options that every other list includes. They work, but they work better when paired with something interactive.
10. Live music or a DJ
Live music or a DJ sets the mood, but it can split a room into people who want to dance and people who want to talk. Use it as the backdrop, not the main event, and keep the volume low enough near the bar for conversation. Check any noise limits with the venue.
11. Casino night
Fun-money casino tables suit a relaxed evening where guests drift between tables and chat with the dealer. It works for mixed groups, but it needs table space and staff. Note this is a fun-casino format only, and venue licensing rules differ, so check with the venue and the supplier.
12. Comedian or magician
A comedian or close-up magician works for a seated crowd and fills a fixed slot, such as between dinner and the bar. The risk is taste: humour that suits one audience falls flat with another, so brief the performer on your group.
Karaoke and food and drink stations also work as supporting acts. A street-food line or dessert station gives people a reason to wander and meet someone new.
Include everyone
An evening that only works for confident drinkers will lose part of the room. Plan the inclusion up front rather than patching it on the night.
- Non-drinkers: build the activity around the game, not the bar. Add proper non-alcoholic drinks rather than just water.
- Mixed abilities: choose formats where people can join at their own pace, such as arcade games or a quiz. Our VR flight simulator has been set up with a mobility walker seat, so ask your supplier what adjustments are possible.
- Introverts: offer hosted formats where the activity gives people something to say, such as The Betrayers, and keep a quiet area.
- Neurodiversity: avoid loud, flashing or surprise formats without warning, and share the plan in advance. Confirm needs with your supplier.
- Remote attendees: if some delegates are online, give them a separate, simple format such as a quiz rather than expecting them to join an in-person game.
Accessibility needs vary. Always confirm specific requirements with your venue and supplier before the day.
Logistics for a conference evening
Most conference socials go wrong on logistics, not ideas. Settle these early.
- Timing: schedule the activity right after the last session or dinner, while energy is high, and keep hosted slots short.
- Room and power: ask the venue about floor space, ceiling height, power points and access for equipment. Tell your supplier the room’s real dimensions.
- Noise: a loud format next to a quiet networking area will annoy both. Separate the zones.
- Branding: custom branding and theming are available on many formats, so ask what can carry your logo or your sponsor’s.
- AV: hosted formats need microphones, screens and a PA. We include AV for The Betrayers and can supply it on request.
We handled post-conference entertainment for 300 guests at Laravel Live. Jonathan Behr, CTO / VP of Engineering, said: “We used Gold Tier Events for an after-conference social with 250+ guests, and I cannot say enough good things about Reece and his crew. They worked with us to understand and implement our requirements, and executed everything professionally and on time. From start to finish, everything was handled perfectly.”
Planning checklist
- Confirm likely attendance for the evening, not the whole conference.
- Choose one hosted format and one drop-in format.
- Check floor space, power, noise limits and the finish time with the venue.
- Plan non-alcoholic drinks and a quiet area.
- Agree branding with sponsors.
- Brief the supplier on your audience, timings and any access needs.
- Confirm setup and breakdown times so the room is ready when the last session ends.
Our conference events service covers all of this, and setup, breakdown, equipment and professional hosts are included with our corporate events.
FAQs
What are some interactive ideas for a conference?
Drop-in formats work best because delegates can join and leave as they like. Arcade games, driving simulators and VR stations suit a free-flow room, while game shows, quizzes and bingo suit a seated, hosted slot. Running one of each gives you something for people who want to compete and for people who would rather chat.
What are 10 examples of entertainment for a conference evening?
Game show challenges, a quiz, bingo, a Traitors-style game, a CSI-style investigation, retro arcade games, driving simulators, VR flight simulators, live music or a DJ, and a comedian or magician. Casino tables and karaoke also work. Choose by group size, room layout and how much your attendees want to talk.
What are some good crowd games for events?
Game shows with Taskmaster-style and Cube-style challenges, quizzes and bingo work well because a presenter can run them for a whole room at once. For a free-flow crowd, arcade games such as air hockey, table football, darts and shuffleboard let people play in short bursts and keep talking.
What are some good themes for corporate events?
TV-inspired themes are popular because guests already know the rules. A Traitors-style game, a Taskmaster-style challenge night or a Cube-style contest all work. Retro arcade and casino nights are classic alternatives. Pick a theme your whole group will recognise, and check it suits any non-drinkers and quieter attendees too.
