CSI Team Building: How a Crime Scene Event Works

Your boss has asked for a team day that is more than a quiz and a sandwich platter. CSI team building turns your colleagues into crime scene investigators. Teams examine clues, compare notes and work out what happened in a staged case. It is mostly thinking and talking rather than sport, so it can suit a wide mix of people.

What CSI team building is

CSI team building is a hosted indoor activity where teams act as investigators. They gather evidence, piece together what it means and agree on a solution to a staged case.

We run a CSI Investigation as part of our indoor team building range, alongside formats like Paint Pad Pro, Escape Room in a Box and arcade stations. It can also run at round dinner tables, as our event photos show.

How a session typically runs

Most detective-style sessions follow the same three beats: a briefing, an investigation and a reveal. The details of our own format vary with your group and venue, so treat this as the general shape and confirm specifics with us.

Briefing and teams

The host explains the case and the rules, and people split into teams. This is the moment to mix departments rather than let friends cluster.

Gathering and analysing evidence

Teams search for clues, share what they find and decide what matters. Detective formats usually reward careful observation and agreeing on what to trust, which gives quieter colleagues room to contribute alongside the loudest voices.

Reporting back and the reveal

Teams put forward their conclusion and the host reveals how close they got. Expect debate and friendly rivalry.

What it builds

A CSI session gives teams practice at problem solving, communication and working with incomplete information. Teams practise these on the day; they are not guaranteed outcomes. One session will not transform a team, but it gives colleagues a shared task to talk about afterwards.

Group size and space

Our Indoor Team Building range runs from 10 to 100+ people. For the room, think tables where teams can sit or stand together and enough quiet to talk. Setup, breakdown and all equipment are provided with our corporate events. Confirm the exact space needed for your numbers when you enquire.

Who it suits and who it doesn’t

It suits new teams, cross-department groups and colleagues who enjoy puzzles and discussion more than sport.

It is less ideal if your group wants high-energy physical games or a loud party atmosphere. In that case consider a VR Escape Room, game show challenges or outdoor team building instead.

Making it inclusive

Think about who might be left out before you book, and ask the supplier how they handle it.

  • Non-drinkers: a daytime session suits mixed groups. Confirm the plan for drinks, if any, when you enquire.
  • Mobility: ask whether anyone needs to stand, walk or reach, and confirm the room layout.
  • Neurodiversity and reading-heavy tasks: ask how clues are presented and whether teammates can share the reading.
  • Hybrid teams: ask whether remote colleagues can take part, as many in-person formats are not designed for it.

Tell us about your group and we will say honestly what works.

Where it fits

CSI works for an away day, a team day or an indoor session where the weather cannot be trusted. It can sit between presentations as a break, or run at dinner tables. See our team building options for how it combines with other activities, or The Betrayers for a social deduction alternative.

What to ask a supplier before booking

  • What space and room layout do you need for our numbers?
  • How long should we allow, and how does that fit our agenda?
  • How many people per team, and how are teams chosen?
  • Can it be branded or themed for our company?
  • How do you handle accessibility needs?
  • Who sets up and breaks down, and when do you arrive?

FAQs

What is the best CSI game for a work team?

It depends on your group, but for colleagues pick a format built around teamwork rather than a video game. A hosted CSI Investigation has teams share clues and agree a conclusion together. If your group wants something different, escape-room formats, quizzes and arcade stations are alternatives, and we can talk you through which fits.

What are some examples of team building experiences?

Examples we run include a CSI Investigation, VR Escape Room, Escape Room in a Box, The Betrayers (inspired by The Traitors), Taskmaster-style game shows and quizzes, and the Tablet Treasure Hunt. Some are thinking-led, some physical. Tell us your group size and space and we will suggest a shortlist.

How many people can take part in CSI team building?

Our Indoor Team Building range, which includes the CSI Investigation, runs from 10 to 100+ people. Team sizes and the best overall number depend on your room and format, so confirm the details for your group when you enquire. We will say honestly if your numbers suit a different activity better.

How long does a CSI team building session take?

The length depends on whether it runs as a standalone session or part of a longer away day, so we do not quote a single figure here. Tell us your agenda and time slot when you enquire, and we will confirm what fits before you commit.

Tell us about your event and we’ll put together a tailored proposal. Enquire here and we will reply within one business day.
